The villages of Shanxi have long been renowned for its folk music tradition. A newly graduated music teacher comes a long way to look for the perfect sound. He becomes the music tutor to the daughter of a local official which soon blooms into a forbidden romance. The girl defiles her father's wish to marry the son of the town's power elite, and pursues her dreams of music at Beijing. But when she returns after her training, her hometown is never the same.
